Unadvertised AA/UA Fare War
  • Frommers reports an unadvertised AA/UA fare war.

    Info here:

    http://www.frommers.com/articles/3618.html

  • $250 from LAX-Washington hardly seems like much of a "War" to me.

Anything under $300 ain't bad for a direct flight.

  • The ongoing absence of UA fares from Travelocity and Yahoo is discussed and somewhat explained here:
    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=544235

  • UA is definitely doing something: BOS to all AA hubs (except ORD) are now in the mid $100s...

  • interesting statement that travelocity stopped listing UA.

I thought I noticed this with Yahoo travel,
but just figured I was being paranoid.

When did this happen, and why?

not quite sure what this has to do with the fare war.

  • This is a tough call...are prices going to go down this summer? If you book AA for under $300 now for an August trans-con, will you regret it in July when UA non-stops drop that low?

This isn't too much fun because nobody is matching.

Nope...no fun. I'm wanting to take UA at least 3 times this summer to SFO. Prices currently around $600 :td:

Emphatically disagree. This is an easy call because:

    (1) UA SFO-IAD transcons have been running $500+ since the beginning of 2006. No reason to think there will be a summer fare sale when planes are now at record loads (80%+), no doubt will be even higher during the busy summer season.

    (2) Best UA transcon fares have been from OAK (to match JetBlue) currently @ $350+. JetBlue fares are going up...ergo UA will go up, too. IMO the nonstops from OAK are not too convenient, 7:20am and the red-eye, vs. a huge menu at SFO.

    (3) Both UA and AA are offering double miles for flights booked before June 1. Don't count on these generous offers to be extended. So you'll get 50% fewer miles if you wait to buy your ticket (excluding bonuses).

    (4) $140+ (or $180 all-in) is probably the best transcon fare that we've seen on AA in a long time, even better than those $200 RTs we saw a few years ago when AA took on JetBlue at JFK. You can't go wrong buying this one, especially with double miles and a huge menu of flight times and airports on both coasts.

Do I wish UA would match? Hell yes, I would rather fly nonstop in E+. But for this deal I will gladly give up a couple of hours.

  • not quite sure what this has to do with the fare war. :confused:It was mentioned in the Frommers fare-war article,
and let me know I wouldn't find
the UA $140 war-fares on Yahoo travel,
no matter how hard I keep looking there !

    Was also curious why,
    but nevermind.

  • Hmm....

But it looks like UA is showing zero interest in matching at their hubs.
And AA is not matching at AA hubs.

  • Actually, the AA congress voted to allower president Arpey to use force but it wasn't an all out decleration of war :D

  • I don't know that I would call it a war...more of a pillaging by AA. UA isn't really doing anything to retaliate

  • how often is a fare "war" "advertised?"

i mean, airlines have sales all the time. but, i've never seen an advertisement that was a declaration of war.

  • Well, I'm screwed then, because I didn't buy in time.

Somewhat mitigated for me was that availability on the days I needed was limited to flights that didn't work particuarly well, and the cost was pushing $300.

Last summer was an entirely different ballgame, but I would note that after watching highish prices on transcons during spring and early summer, there was a nice, sharp drop in late July, and I was able to book what I needed then. That included UA.
