» From NYT: Urban Parents Come to Support School Vouchers
"As mayor, if I can't get the city together, people move out," said Mr. Williams, who attended Catholic schools as a child. "If I can't get the schools together, why should there be a barrier programmatically to people exercising their choice and moving their children out?" But the interest in school choice is strong, even without consistent evidence that low-income children do better in charter or private schools. The largest one-time study of student achievement recently compared math scores of pupils from similar backgrounds on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and found neither private school nor charter students doing better than those in public schools. www.nytimes.com April 6, 2006 Program on Vouchers Dra...... - 2008-12-20

I almost find this hard to believe, but then "a perp is a perp" as Demo D ick would say. Article (http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/DailyNews/ross_bryant020606.html)the whole thing just sounds fishier than an alaskan harbor. some seems true enough, but there's some crap in there that's about as believable as ralek's dominance of the UFC circuit. If this is true, then the political correctness movement has cost us about 3000 lives. -FJdemo-d1ck? - u talkin 'bout Paul Mitchell? aka ricky marcinko?I find this very hard to believe...black eyes eh? » A hello, rant, & some questions
Hi everyone, My name's michelle, I'm 18 & from Australia. I am in a wheelchair due to Spina Bifida, & have had scoliosis since a very young age. For some odd reason I had a brace but was never really pushed into actually wearing it. Had first surgery when I was 12 (1999), to fuse/rod most of my back. This was a bit of a disaster, first with being given water to drink soon after surgery (only meant to be Gatorade apparently), which could have made my spinal cord swell & get damaged, or even my brain (which could have killed me); the epidural was in a wrong spot, so was giving me no pain relief, although did kindly leave part of my back & chest numb; they also stuffed up with rolling me, kicking me out of ICU against my doctors wishes...... - 2008-12-20

Hello. my dad started to teach me some chinese style when i was 11 and he stoped teaching me because he "retiered" from practicing the arts. he left me hanging. I was wondering if someone could help me identify it and maybe find someone to finish guiding me. thank you. :confused:It was a style that had 5 animals. Also it had a lot to do with chi and using your chi to block or stop your oponents circle of energy. It dealt with the four seasons as applied to 24 hours. pretty much it was the opposite of accupuncture. I know a little bit of tai chi chuan , and chi kung was mixed in but the were also animal like movements. » Airports ...
OK, here is my day in a brief summary: I checked in this mornig at Heathrow airport at 10, just to find out after passing all security, that my flight was cancelled due to fog. So I had to get out, get to the Lufthansa desk and get a new flight with BA, then, again through security, pick up luggage, out again, change terminal, check in with BA. ... then BA flight cancelled too, re-booked on another BA flight, and so on and on and on ... at some point i gave up, had lots of Baileys from the friendly Baileys-for-free man, then got to a bar and downed a couple of pints to kill airport frustration. But then I realised that I apparently had lost my last valid ticket (drunk?), so back to the BA desk and get a new one. Finally, 5 in the afternoon...... - 2008-12-20
» Drag and Drop Tree node to a leaf
Hi, I have been trying to drag and drop a node into a leaf node, but unable to do that. When I empty a folder and that particular node becomes a leaf, I can drop other nodes into that leaf and that leaf then becomes the folder back. But the same doesn't works with the already existing leaves. Is there any way to do this? Thanks, NitinWell, it's a matter of definitions. Leaf is leaf and it cannot have children. Empty directory changes is't icon so it looks like leaf (there are some workarounds for this default behavior hanging around on forums) but it doesn't make it leaf, it's still directory instead. You mean to say that there is no way that I can drop a node, on a leaf that was created at the time of tree formation. I under...... - 2008-12-20
» What affect has smaller sensor on a lens? Let's understand it
An 85mm lens on a 350D camera. It seems to me that many people think that you simply multiply the 85mm by the crop factor and you have a 136mm lens. Here's what I think - You don't! Instead of more you get less. Go out and take a photo on a full frame camera with the 85mm lens, print it say 16" x 10", cut 1.6 from the sides leaving the middle 10" X 6.25" of the original size and that's what you get, a cropped photo. ----------- ----- 1.6x ----- ----------- [no expense spared graphic] Now if I had used a 136mm lens and would have been 1.6 times further back I would have got the same shot. At no time did the 85mm lens turn into a 136mm lens we just simply cut off the sides to give the same viewing angle.m m m m m . . . . the ...... - 2008-12-20

For the last couple of years ACV has a BOGO free sale between Christmas and New Year. Not sure if there will be another, but there was an ad for BOGO free in the Travel Section of Saturday's Toronto Star with some very good deals listed, but only for the first couple of weeks of January and only for Cuba, DR and Mexico. I just booked a 4.5 star all inclusive resort (with casino ^) in Puerto Plata for Jan 4. I booked biz class seats and total was $1367/pp all in. I'm trying to put together a MR. My first attempt and I'm kind of lost. I've read all the info here, but I don't really understand the routing codes. I've found a CO flight IAH-LGA, with routing codes: ROUTING 851 FROM-TO HOU-CO-HOU-CO-NYC* What does that mean? Does that mean no other stops are allowed? Or is one stop allowed? ARGH! I wish I hadn't waited until so late in the year to tackle this. I mis-calculated my miles for the year and now I'm paying. Literally. My guess is that the routing is left over from the EFD-IAH flights. If not, than I really don't understand it either. But, according to that, it seems that you need to be on the non-stop IAH-LGA. Someone will correct me if my thinking is incorrect. danEsse...... - 2008-12-20

» This Would be Embarrasing
http://www.thestar.com/News/article/246027 Whoops! NASA apparently made a few errors in their calculations and now they are saying 1998 wasn't the hottest on record in the U.S. The Dust Bowl year of 1934 now ranks as the hottest on record. "More significantly, the agency reduced the mean U.S. "temperature anomalies" for the years 2000 to 2006 by 0.15 degrees Celsius" I don't understand how somebody could have messed that up. I do know that if I were responsible I would feel like a pretty big ass given the reputation that NASA has. There is a discussion on the Real Climate (http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007/08/1934-and-all-that/) site about what happened. I'm sure this question has been posed many times in this forum. I have a sister that is 16yrs with a S curve. 45 degrees lower curve and 61 degrees upper curve. She does not have any pain or discomfort due to scoliosis. I understand that if she does not have surgery, she may have cardiac & breathing problems later in life. I also know that it is better to have the surgery when you are younger versus older. I've done quite a bit of research on the immediate and long term effect of having and not having the surgery. A lot of people still have some degree of pain decades after the surgery depending on the type of instruments used. Harrington vs. Cotrel-Dubousset. One concern is disk degenerative disease. A while back I was playing with the D70 set to manual with a Metz 45CL connected via a simple hot shoe adaptor. What really surprised me is that the camera and flash sync was flawless up to 1/4000 sec. When I test this with the D80 or the D200, it does not work. Is there a fundamental difference with the D70 shutter? The D70 uses an electronic shutter, which basically means there is no shutter. Power is turned on and off to the sensor instead of using a shutter. The actual x-sync speed of the D70 is 1/500, because this is the fastest reliable shutter speed, but you can technically use any. The D80 and D200 use traditional focal plane shutters, and anything faster than 1/250 is faster than the duration of the flash. You will see the shut...... - 2008-12-20

This is one of the many concepts that will be shown on our new DVD's. The “Steiner Point” (advanced calculus) is a point located within a triangle such that the distance from a point to all three vertices is minimal. This concept is an example of optimization with respect to minimization. Does your wing chun use this concept applied both to your triangular offensive and defensive structures? how do you work on getting the most out of your wing chun, with the least amount of movements? Mount Spurr, the volcano on Anchorage's doorstep, is kicking up once again, the first time since it erupted 12 years ago, scientists said this week. Tiny earthquakes by the hundreds have been rumbling beneath the mountain across Cook Inlet from the city, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. The observatory on Monday raised its official level of concern from Code Green, or "No eruption anticipated," to Yellow, meaning "An eruption is possible in the next few weeks and may occur with little or no additional warning." Scientists hastened to say the earthquake swarm does not necessarily presage an eruption of Spurr, which blew its top three times in 1992 and, in the August '92 explosion, spread a thin, obnoxious la...... - 2008-12-20

Thought you'd like to know before I post on Starwoods page. Cost $66 on Sunday night DanBut I bet it doesn't hold a candle to the Westin LAX that has consistently been getting winning bids of less than $30 plus bonus money for weekend stays through Priceline http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif As to your 8.5 out of 10, hmmm. What would you rate a 10?Sheryl, The Hilton at LAX is a 10. That 0-10 scale is strictly is LAX only. DanI just stayed at that FourPoints last night and considering LAX hotels only I would give it an 8. I would give the Hilton LAX ...... - 2008-12-20
» Best Caribbean Place to Use Hotel Points
OK, folks, we are trying to plan a vacation for next Feb.- March. Two kids in college next year, so we are only considering FF tickets and using hotel points. I have enough Marriott, Hilton and Starwood points for a vacation at most places in the Caribbean we might want to go. Question is -- where would you go on points in the Caribbean? Please note that I really don't want recommendations for any hotels, even if they are GREAT(!!!) if I can't use points to stay there. See paragraph 1. Thanks all.Take a direct flight to St. Thomas (if you are close to an NYC airport - I see you are in NJ) and then use Marriott points to stay at the resort there. Stay for an entire week to get the biggest bang for your points. I actually pref...... - 2008-12-20
» G5 superdrive
Is the superdrive of a G5 the same as those used in PCs ? I checked the info of my G5 and it's a pioneer dvd-r. If I need to upgrade to a faster writer, can I just buy the writers sold in PC shops ?Yes in theory since the PMac G5s use standard optical drives (tray loading). The only issue to this is that if you do replace it, the new drive might not be recognized by native iApps like iDVD. If this turns out to be the case once you do the swap, you will need to download a nifty utility called Patchburn (http://www.patchburn.de/) in order for your Mac to fully recognize your optical drive. If you will install a Pionner drive no need to install Patchburn. With my G4 MDD I had to remove the faceplace of the tray, I'm not sure with G5. :Dthank...... - 2008-12-20

» YVR-SEA...why so expensive right now?
I'm looking at dates in early August and the lowest r/t fare is $368CAD (or $335 USD)!?! Granted, that same fare is what UA, AC, & NW are quoting for YVR-SEA. (120 miles) In previous years, that route was usually somewhere around $120-150, tops. I can appreciate that there are extra fuel costs etc. but I find that a fare on a 30 min. Horizon flight to be grossly expensive; I could get to ORD, ATL or MSP for less. My YVR-SEA-KTN flight is going to be double what I paid for that past few years...almost $900 CAD r/t vs. $450 last year.Have you checked SEA-PDX? It's also absurdly expensive! Ah, where is Southwest or Westjet (or any other LCC) when you need them? Have you checked bus or train fares from YVR-SEA? I believe that there is ...... - 2008-12-20

For the past many builds I've had problems with pauses when viewing movies (normal dvd's). 720p, analog audio, render v2. The weird part is that there are no framedrops and nothing in the log file I know others have the same problem, but I guess not all since there is no focus on this. Today I softmodded a new xbox and installed latest t3ch build. Same problem here. Sadly I do not recall which version this problem was introduced in, but it's quiet a while ago (many months). Any ideas?Buffering settings? Perhaps a dirty dvd drive.. Ive never had this issue personally...this is when streaming from a nas. it's not buffering. it just pauses for a fraction of a second. used to worjk fine in previous builds. » A Meaningless 7-Digit Number
Last week, my mileage account passed the million mile mark for the first time on SEA-EWR. I know it doesn't mean much; my BIS miles must still be less than 300K on Alaska (though total BIS across all airlines is probably around 450K). And my life time mileage earnings are already probably around 1.3 on AS, since I have done redemptions over the years. But it's still exciting to see the account roll past 1 million for the first time. Cromely. Taking pleasure in the little things...Does AS keep track of lifetime miles? "If I can't get the schools together, why should there be a barrier programmatically to people exercising their choice and moving their children out?" But the interest in school choice is strong, even without consistent evidence that low-income children do better in charter or private schools.

I'm trying to put together a MR. My first attempt and I'm kind of lost. I've read all the info here, but I don't really understand the routing codes. I wish I hadn't waited until so late in the year to tackle this. I mis-calculated my miles for the year and now I'm paying. Literally. My guess is that the routing is left over from the EFD-IAH flights. If not, than I really don't understand it either. Has it reached a level of acceptance in the scientific community there? Is the research typically state sanctioned?...... - 2008-12-20

Been a long time since I've posted.... let alone Shot photos. But here are these adorable kittens that spawned somewhere in my neighborhood and moved into my backyard. I've named them Larry, Curly, and Moe.... and i refuse to kick them out.... though they are still scared of me and the camera... so its been Telephoto all the way all these were handheld and shot with a Nikkor 200mm F4 lens, and a Nikon N90s body, with Kodak Portra 160VC so excuse the slightly out of focus ones http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h193/jonnyvpa//kittens/sunlitkittyptrt.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h193/jonnyvpa//kittens/sunlitkitty.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h193/jonnyvpa//kittens/lostinthought.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h...... - 2008-12-20
» Marine Corp
Well, not that anyone cares, but I believe when my last year of HS is over, and I am done with bodybuilding, I am going to join the marine corp. I thought about it (not long and hard) and although I have brains, I really don't give a flying **** about my life in general, and I think if a path was already put out for me I would continue to live. Plus, how cool would 'marine corp' look on a resume?I went Army, but you will not be dissapointed in your choice. The service is a great way to go and you have many oppertunities open to you. The military is nothing that you expect until you get there and then you realize what a great choice it was and how it will help your life. » D70 flash sync speed
» Chi in Wing Chun
Do any of you on this forum believe that there is chi within wing chun? If so, do any of you practice the forms with this in mind? Also, did your teacher ever talk about the internal aspects of wing chun and do you know of any sifus that do understand the internal side? I am wondering because the more that I am learning about wing chun, the more I want to explore the internal side of it. Don't get me wrong though, I am still into learning how to fight with it, but the internal aspects are just really interesting to me. Any help would be appreciated, like links or books. Thanks P.S. I've asked my sifu and he doesn't know anything about it. He's asked his sifu and he doesn't believe in it. :(Hello. Many consider that Wing Chun is b...... - 2008-12-20

I did some art work a long time ago that I've been trying to document in a different way instead of just scanning it in. I took the following photo as a first attempt. Thanks, Neuner http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x130/Nevnor/Posting/Repetitionsmall.jpgNada? You're not going to hurt my feelings if you don't like it.I cant get my head round what exactly it is that is up for discussion. » Interactive Math Activities online
I'm a high school math teacher and found a great site : www.mathwarehouse.com . It has some really awesome interactive activities you can have your kids use to learn slope, ordered-pairs, or a great one one triangles (You should check out the latter at http://www.mathwarehouse.com/geometry/triangles/interactive-triangle.htm ). Has anyone found any other good interactive math websites or even just great interactive math software (that's not necessarily web-based)? I teach in the inner city in New York, and my students have responded so strongly to interactive math software at the site above that i'm trying to see what else is out there!www.merlot.orgThis site was one of my favorite finds recently. » Rome to Sardinia
I'm trying to get to Sardinia (OLB-preferred or Cagliari) May 24th, 2007 from Rome. I've checked Meridiana and it appears they do not fly on that day. Does anyone know alternative ways to get to Costa Smeralda (porto cervo) on a Thursday (Boat, another carrier, alternative departure city). We are leaving CDG on the 24th and flying to rome on an award ticket, so if there are places around CDG that we can fly to OLB on the cheap I can void that section of the award ticket. Any help is greatly appreciated.I've checked all places I know of (Travelocity, Orbitz, Meridiana) for flights from Italy on May 24th with no luck. The Indian society is financially divided into five levels. They are upper class, upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class, and lower class. The lower class people are generally poor people with no guarantee of earning two square meals a day. Daily employment is a compulsion for them for survival and these people are the favorite pray for money lenders for earning a fast buck. The lower middle class people are with fixed incomes of lower level but always prefer to lead a decent life without exposing their poor financial status. The middle class people are earning sufficient income to meet their financial obligations and prefer to plan for the future. The upper middle class is surviving high disposable incomes.About upper class no...... - 2008-12-20
» Calculus for wing chun "Steiner Point Theory".
Here is a diagram that I made explaining this theory. "Diagram" (http://www.detroitwingchun.com/stheory.htm) Ali Hamad Rahim. detroitwingchun.com (http://detroitwingchun.com)Here is a perfect example of the “Steiner Point” Theory in action. ...... - 2008-12-20

» Alaska Volcano Rumbles
» Sheraton Four Points ---LAX
Just for the record, and to make sure it gets a good read here, the Sheraton Four Points at LAX is a fine property. It's no Hilton, but a very acceptable 8.5 on a 0-10 scale.

Hi Everyone, please enlighten me. ..I went to tokyo last july 23 to attend an interview and luckily i got the job, what happened then? it is the first time the company is hiring overseas and they dont know anything about the working visa issue thing. they gave me a copy of the application form of the certificate of eligibility with the contract and other documents about the company, they were hoping that i could file the application form of my certificate of eligibility in my home country..of course through common sense i kept on thinking something is wrong along the way..so through research i learned that indeed the certificate should be applied in the immigration in tojyo. i was bound to go home the next day so i called up the company wh......
» Movie pauses
Are you ever going to redeem any of those 1 million+ miles?Does AS keep track of lifetime miles? Are you ever going to redeem any of those 1 million+ miles? yes, they do.
